Swiss vaping regulations

From 1 October 2024, Switzerland applies new rules to vaping products under the Tobacco Products Act (LPTab) and the Tobacco Products Ordinance (OPTab). These measures aim to strengthen the protection of young people and ensure safer consumption for all users.

Age verification: a strengthened requirement
The sale of vaping products to minors is now strictly prohibited.
• Online: verification through access control.
• In the shop: systematic age checks with every purchase.

Labelling and health warnings
All products, with or without nicotine, must display a clear health warning.
The label must also state the exact nicotine content and comply with strict standards to ensure full transparency.

Packaging of nicotine liquids
To limit the risks associated with excessive consumption, volumes are now regulated:
• Refills: a maximum of 10 ml per bottle, with a concentration of up to 20 mg/ml.
Nicotine boosters remain permitted, but customers must add nicotine to their e-liquids themselves.

Taxation of nicotine products
A federal tax now applies:
• Nicotine e-liquids: CHF 2.– per 10 ml bottle.
• Sealed cartridges: CHF 0.40.– per 2 ml pod.
This measure leads to higher prices for products containing nicotine.

Advertising and promotion: extended restrictions
Advertising for vaping products is now prohibited:
• In public spaces, cinemas, transport and media accessible to minors.
• Competitions and free product distribution are also prohibited.
